285the circuit and I was watching in the control tower. To begin with each QFI had to watch his own student but when they became more competent any QFI could watch them. On this day a totally un-forecast line squall went through. Caroline was very sensible and just cleared the circuit as the cloud base came down. She then returned into the circuit, and I think I told her to land. She overshot twice because of the windshear. Watching your own student struggling was awful. Probably not helped by the Air Traffic Controller saying things to me like, %u201cthat doesn%u2019t look good%u201d. She landed from her third approach, and I got into the aircraft with her to returned to Linton. She told me recently that I made her a cup of tea after we landed. An instructor had never done that for her before, but I can remember being a bit shaken. Usually, the student made a tea or coffee while the instructor did some admin tasks. I did have a student overshoot on his first solo once which was equally scary.I had good continuity with Caroline as she progressed through the course. She did her land away to RNAS Culdrose via Lyneham on the way down, but it was a long 1.20 trip direct on the way back. That was a long trip in the JP. Her aircraft handling was always quite good although she could get a bit muddled on some procedural bits at first, I think. Night flying was always a bit more relaxed as only one flight did it at a time. On one of the instructional trips with a different student, we were amused to realise that Caroline was doing the talk down. Boy,could she talk fast. At some point I flew her father on an SCT trip. He had been a RN helicopter pilot but then flew for British Airways. He had trained in the Piston Provost and enjoyed his JP trip. At the end of the basic phase Caroline got married and changed to Caroline Maggs. I am sure that her course was glad that the marriage had finally taken place as the planning for it had been her main subject of conversation for a long time. Not something that was usually talked about in an aircrew crewroom at that time. For me it was a bit irritating as far as my
