Boys experimented more I think but the results were the same in the end.In 1992 the RAF sent us to Laarbruck in Germany. The Tornado Squadron had moved out at some point and Harriers were going to move in later in the year. The powers that be realised that the airfield had been quiet with no aircraft regularly using it for much of the summer and so it was thought to be a good idea to get the locals used to a bit of noise before the Harriers arrived. I think we took 6 JPs over via Coltishall to fly a formation phase of the course. There was a snag however, in that we had to remain in a fairly small box. The next formation was not allowed to take off until the previous one had landed and so we could not get as many sorties in as we would have liked. Also, it turned out that we had to remain 5 miles from the edge of our box and the German ATC got concerned when we even approached that limit. The Station Commander decided to come out at one point, and he flew out with a young WRAF officer. I think that she may have just been holding. As there was a fairly long sea crossing, I had to give her a dinghy drill but we had no slots at our normal pool in York booked. In the end I asked the headmaster of Alne Primary School if we could use his pool and he let us. This was the school that our children had gone to, so my local knowledge helped. I think there were some staff and pupils at the poolwhen we did the drill, and they were all a bit surprised about it. We got home on the Friday and the next Monday went up to Lossiemouth for our nav det. Each course went somewhere out of area to carry out low level nav training somewhere well away from Linton as by that stage in the course they were too familiar with possible nav routes. A WRAF air trafficker (Julie Crockford) had been on the same Initial Officer Training Course with some of our students and they sort of ar-
