                                    268picked up. I was of course sworn to secrecy. It was a fair call but I did not really want the added responsibility. Apart from the safety aspect, I now knew where we were on Dartmoor. In one area we were told that enemy troops would soon sweep the area and to prepare hides. We all did, scraping out graves and making a cover to drop over it. Sometime later the staff came charging into the area and most people scurried to their hides. I thought that would be daft as none of them were anywhere near finished so I ran. I can remember jumping over a fence and racing down a hill. I found a fallen tree, buried myself under the roots and lay still. I cannot remember if I took my pack but I certainly had some stuff. Everything was very quiet and after a couple of hours I crept back to our camping place. People were getting on with various tasks and looking a bit glum. There was no sign of the staff. As I had expected, most of them had been found and given a hard time physically. Sitting in stress positions and generally being pushed around. I was one of the few who had not been caught. I cannot remember catching much to eat although there were trout in the stream.Eventually we knew we were coming to the end of the field stage and were again told that we had to remain in a certain area and hide. We all were going to be interrogated but if you were not found you would get a cup of tea first. I built a super hide and got myself buried with one of the guys ensuring that I was well covered. Some chaps had elected to climb into the trees and so they could help with the covering up. While I was lying there, I realised that I had some chewing gum in my pocket and decided to chew it all. After all, it would be taken from me when I was caught. It is a strange feeling lying underground and hearing people crashing about above you. At one point I was almost stood on so felt that I had cracked it. Then, there was a scuffling and a large black nose appeared. It was a large dog and had probably smelt my chewing gum. What a fool but I had not thought of dogs. I was quickly
