No sooner was one appointed as the Station CSRO than he was posted or took up some other appointment such as a Flight Commander. This meant there was not much stability of people running the LSEs. I suggested that as I was at Linton long term and now had no extraneous duties I could fill the roll. The CI agreed and so I was sent on the CSRO Course in October. This was and is quite a demanding course physically. You start by having a refresher on survival techniques but soon get into the practical bits. We did dinghy drills in a pool and also in the sea. We covered both single seat and multi seat dinghy%u2019sand had to be winched out from them. I think we may have actually done one at night which was a bit scary. Bobbing about in a single seat dinghy when you cannot sea land is an interesting experience. We learned not only to do the drill but also how to supervise such a drill. Eventually we were bussed out to Dartmoor and left to our own devices with just a ration pack. Mine would have just contained a few sweets which was all that was in the JP pack. We were carefully searched to ensure that we did not cheat. We had to walk to various rendezvous sites and make natural shelters or use our parachutes. The staff would come and give us something to kill perhaps from time to time. We were supposed to be at war and so often had to hide. I was a bit of an oddity on the course , firstly because I was a Squadron Leader and also because I was a fair bit older than the rest. Sometimes I think that you have more stamina with age and I can remember carrying my partners pack as well as my own on one move when he was struggling. At one point very strong winds were forecast and the staff were worried that trees might fall on us. A situation that later occurred to my students on one LSE. I was taken aside and told that if it looked dangerous I was to take charge and they told me take everyone to where we would be
