259Beningbrough Hall where she worked waiting on when there was a function as there was that night. She had worked as a dinner lady at Alex%u2019s primary school while Alex was there but had moved on. I had been begging her for some time to get some secretarial type training so that she could get a better job if she wanted to work now that the children were at secondary school. Later that evening I told Ben that I was going to walk to Beningbrough Hall. I was in pieces and then told him why. Somehow, Dickon and Alex heard what was happening and so we all walked to Beningbrough. The boys were OK but it was a long way for Alex and late at night. When Gabby came out chatting to Pillie Rigby, she saw all 4 of us standing by the car. This must have been an enormous shock to her. She made some kind of excuse to Pillie, got us all into the car and drove us home. I cannot remember anything else about that night. Very quickly a meeting between Gabby, myself, John and Sue, his wife who was equally keen to save their marriage. was arranged and we all met in their kitchen. I cannot remember what was said but at some point John said that he wanted to talk to Gabby privately and they went to another room for a bit. I think that there was a possibility that they would stop the affair. And so there was some hope. Obviously, things were far from normal but I had arranged to take Dickon and 3 other scouts camping for the weekend and Gabby and I thought that I should carry on and do that. I think that at the meeting they had agreed not to see each other, but I was worried that they would not keep to that agreement when I was away. In fact when I got back Alex told me that Gabby had indeed phoned John. Very shortly after that John drove off for his 6 week holiday in Spain with his 2 girls. We all waved them off in a friendly manner as he drove away down the back lane. I later pointed out to Gabby that if he really loved her, he could have better spent the time finding somewhere for them to live together.
