294out a forced landing. If we hit a bird, the drill was to leave the throttle alone if the engine was working and get yourself into a position to land safely. The rest of us gave control back to the students and they carried on their various routes to Wick. The problem was how to tell Mark that the Flight Commander had had a bird strike and gone into Lossiemouth, when none of us should have been anywhere near him. Somehow it was done.At Lossiemouth, as soon as he called Pan, the controllers threw off their gas masks with great glee and went back to peace time drills. At the same time, a formation of Buccaneers was recovering. This was the plan that we had been tasked to interrupt. The Buccaneer leader called for recovery and was told that there was a JP with a suspected bird strike in the overhead. As quick as a flash, the Buccaneer leader said %u201cRoger, diverting to Leuchars%u201d and gave a frequency change. They were delighted as they were now out of the exercise. In May, I went into Standards to work up for my A1 which I achieved at the end of the month. But with nearly 4000 hours so on JPs so I should have. In fact, I only did 6 instructional sorties on the JP after that before converting to the Tucano. The rest of that summer was a bit messy flying wise. I converted to the Tucano but had to fly the JP about once a month to keep current. We periodically flew the JPs down to Shawbury where I believe they were sold. We also had to refresh some of Caroline%u2019s course who had had to hold as there were no places available for them on the next course. Apparently, the Gulf war had interrupted the training machine as instructors were sent back to the front line. This refresher must have been a bit difficult for the students as some of them had to do it on the Tucano which they had never flown before. We also ran out of students. As we did not have much to do someone had the bright idea for us to go on a staff ALT. We would then better know what was expected of the stu-
