246times Elvington. Students had to be checked on the various transit procedures and also for landing on 28 at Linton which was a bit short. I note that I checked a new QFIs at one point who had been a student on the Squadron when I was at Linton before. That became more common in time. There was quite a hiatus on the Squadron at around this time. While I think that I remember what happens it is hard to work out from my log book. Each month the months entries were signed off by the Flight Commander and also the Squadron Commander. Periodically also by the CI and the Station Commander. Thus when the Flight Commander no longer signed mine, I must have been the Flight Commander and if the Squadron Commander no longer signed it I must have been the Squadron Commander. However, I cannot read the various signatures and I am not sure if the sequence is absolutely correct. I think the first thing that happened was during an LSE in the North York Moors. The students had to set up a location exercise with signal fires and signs. An aircraft from Linton would fly out at an agreed time and find them and comment on how good the signals were. Obviously, the pilot knew where they were to begin with and so it was not too hard. On this occasion the flight commander flew the search aircraft and did so at very low level, pulling hard around a bend in the valley where we were. This was rather foolish as he knew his Squadron Commander was there at the time. The Squadron Commander promptly sacked him and indeed he may have been posted. The squadron now needed a new Flight Commander and as there was no up and coming flight lieutenant available, the boss asked if I would do it. This was actually a bit of a pain as it involved a certain amount of extra work with no reward. I could not be promoted as Spec Aircrew and was not supposed to be in a supervisory post. However, I relented and so became OC B Flight for a while. This was probably sometime in November 1987. I remained doing this until May 1988.
