                                    226The basic Squadron Commanders went through all their students and how they were getting on. I would report on the QFIs we had been working with and would offer opinions on the next Flight Commanders and so on. I think we took it in turns to produce a can of beer each for these meetings but anyway when we got to 5 o%u2019clock the CI would call the meeting over and we would go to the bar. This kept the meetings short and to the point, thank goodness. I cannot remember how the problem with the new chap was resolved. I think that he had been a chipmunk QFI prior to being selected to us and so it wasn%u2019t a surprise that he struggled. My Flight Commander at that time was Sqn Ldr Bo Plummer who was a very experienced Spec Aircrew QFI and he may have been made OC Standards. Any way I left and started at Linton onOuse on 1 July 1985.Chapter 22I had of course to do all the usual arrival checks to prove that I could fly the JP but was finally accepted onto B Flight, 1 Squadron, where I was to remain for the next 16 years. The first thing I had to do was to act as liaison between Linton and Tholthorpe over a monument for the Canadians who had served at Tholthorpe during the war. When the Canadians had arrived Geoff was an 11 year old boy and had firm memories of what had happened. He had met several of the Veterans from time to time and from this had come a decision to erect a monument on the village green. This had been designed by the Canadians and the inscription was in French and English as the 4 main Squadrons had been French Canadian. The inscriptions were on either face of the monument that was positioned such that the sun shone on them equally. We also planted an avenue of Maples and Oak trees either side of the road past the airfield. A committee had been set up and inevitably as the only RAF chap living in Tholthorpe I was involved. Actually, my involvement was very minor and consisted mainly of getting the Station Commander
