225primary instructor. I negotiated this with the Squadron downstairs and they allocated an APO Doust to me. I am not sure what he felt about it but he did settle down. It must have been somewhat odd for him. He would come upstairs prior to a flight and then would wait in our crew room which was for both my Squadron pilots and any other QFIs who were being standardised. I seem to remember that the first time he came up to see if I was ready, he walked into our crew room and one of my QFIs got up and made him a coffee while he was waiting. I took him up to his progress test although his Squadron also flew with him from time to time. I also took him on some air tests. Actually I took several students on air tests which gave them a little free experience and helped them to realise that we were not ogres. I should have been posted in mid-1984 but that would just leave a year before my option point. I went to the Station Commander and suggested that I stayed at Church Fenton to that option point when I would either take the option to leave or go Specialist Aircrew. That would also mean that I would run another SSAFA Air Day and that having successfully done 2 would probably be one less headache for him. He agreed with that plan. In the end I decided to stay in and went Spec Aircrew. I would have to be posted away from Church Fenton but they were happy to post me to Linton which was ideal. In the end there was a bit of a problem. I was not going to be directly replaced but one of the other Squadron Commanders would take over from me and the new man in would take over his Squadron. A new chap came in and I flew with him as part of his arrival check. He had been a QFI in the past and had had a refresher course but I did not think that he was up to the job. I had to see the CI about this and was a bit worried that he would think that I just wanted to remain at Church Fenton which is why I had failed him. I assured him that this was not the case and he believed me. Oscar had left and we now had Wg Cdr Walters. He was a great CI. We had weekly meetings in his office to talk about everything that was happening.
