6Preface The inspiration for this collection of anecdotes comes from two sad episodes involving members of 94 Entry D Squadron. First was the tragic death of our great mate, Bob Hooper, dying far too young in sad circumstances. For the funeral, Colin Pilcher had the excellent idea of appealing to Bob%u2019s D Squadron chums and others for anecdotes relating to Bob. Colin put together a booklet of a dozen or so contributions %u2013 which, collectively, captured the delightful man that was Bob Hooper. Bob%u2019s widow, Penny, their son and their daughter made it clear that the collection of stories meant a lot to them.In turn, when our much-loved and admired Colin lost his long battle with Multiple Sclerosis, it seemed only right to create a similar collection of anecdotes devoted to him. The collection of a couple of dozen stories again summed up Colin and made it clear how he had earned our admiration. It was my privilege to read out a small number at Colin%u2019s funeral service, conducted admirably by a manifestly caring vicar. But here a surprisingly bitter-sweet thing happened. Amongst the tears and sadness of Colin%u2019s children and grandchildren, I spotted his young grandson smiling and even chuckling %u2018midst the tears at some of the stories. He told me laterthat he had learned so much more about Grandpa Colin. It occurred to me that whilst the spouses/partners and children of fellow 94 Entry reprobates may have been bored by Dad%u2019s tales, the next generation, the grandchildren, will probably have a less clear idea of how grand-dad spent some of his youth %u2013 and may well be in for a surprise or two about the mischief of which the sedate old boy was capable in an age gone by.The aim of these anecdotes on the occasion of 50 years since the graduation of 94 Entry is to: bring back some memories, recount tales relating to their mates perhaps being heard by some for the first time, share these tales with wives and partners and children who will not have heard all of them and above all provide a source of
