36We can certainly claim to have heightened the bar, considerably, on the Entry record for the number of people involved in a car accident %u2013 a record never surpassed. David ForsythMy First Passion WagonJust prior to my arrival at the College of Knowledge, I had purchased %u2013 at a knockdown price from the company for which my father worked %u2013 a car which had been used by their sales reps and had become due for exchange; this splendid vehicle was a Ford Consul.Sadly, having come almost directly from school, I had not had any driving lessons, so I was reliant on the goodwill %u2013 or mutual benefit %u2013of my colleagues on 94D for the supervision required to make me legal. This was usually forthcoming, although it could have its drawbacks %u2013 my left knee suffered almost permanent damage from batterings with a large ruler belonging to one of my %u2018mentors%u2019, the penalty for %u2018riding the clutch%u2019. Needless to say, I had no difficulty in securing supervision %u2013 or, indeed, as many passengers as the car would hold %u2013 for a Saturday night foray into Lincoln and LTC; my rates must have been lower than Bill Campbell%u2019s. Also needless to say, assaults on my person were less frequent on the return journey, when my self-loading freight was inebriated, asleep, or, usually, both.The Ford Consul had many fine features, principal among which was a large and wide bench front seat, made possible by the column gearshift. This, on occasions when some measure of success was achieved in the pursuit of the fairer sex, rendered the back seat surplus to requirements, although my lack of a driving licence meant that, unless the young lady in question was well endowed, with a licence I mean, the car was anchored to the LTC car park. The trusty Consul did have the odd drawback, such as a vacuumdriven windscreen wiper system, which worked fine when preparing to pass some slowcoach, but then stopped entirely when one put one%u2019s foot down to overtake.
