33One remarkable thing was that despite being an excellent pilot, he had not yet passed his Driving Test so had to have a qualified %u201cCo-pilot%u201d in his Fordie Pop. Some months later, he was awarded his %u201cLicence to kill%u201d and promptly sold the Ford to buy a Frog-Eye Mark 1 AustinHealey Sprite from Nigel Appleby on 91 Entry. Nigel wanted only %u00a3100 as the Sprite had been %u201cmodified%u201d. The front end was badly damaged.A couple of weeks later, Chris recounted how he had been going down the A1 when he had got into a %u201cdice%u201d with someone. He had lost control and gone up the banking, mowing down several young saplings before dropping back down to the road again. Rather shaken, he had left the main road and gone into Stamford. Stopping at traffic lights, he had been tail-ended and shunted into the car in front. This allowed him to claim for both the new and the pre-existing damage to his Frogeye on the insurance of the driver who tail-ended him. Several weeks later, the car had been repaired. After an evening in Lincoln, I was a passenger in Bob Hooper%u2019s car for the return to Cranwell, leaving Lincoln by the alternate route via Bracebridge Heath. At one point there is/was a bend with a strange camber which threw one%u2019s car over towards the left hand banking. We found a car upside down half way up the banking and soon realised it was Chris%u2019 car with the windscreen frame flattened down to the bodywork. After several minutes hunting for him, we headed to the hospital to see if he was there. (No mobile phones then!) Success! With head swathed in bandages, he came out smiling.
