40sequence to this that involved a number of turns to make sure there was no-one below you. So, while the captain was doing this you would detract him, perhaps calling out a contact in the distance. He would look and you would just flick the engine shut off switch above his head. If he was already slowing down with power off at this point, he would not feel the yaw and on a piston engine, instruments do not show any sign of failure for a while. The propeller maintains rotation in the airflow. Then when the aircraft stalled, he would apply full power but of course only one engine would be working. The aircraft would immediately roll violently probably to more than 90 degrees of bank. The only way to recover was to throttle back and push the nose down to regain speed. For the co-pilot who knew what was going to happen it was hilarious. For the captain for whom it was a great surprise somewhat less so.I have already mentioned our low flying route. It was the only route we flew so having pilot navigated round it once you sort of knew it. Some student captains preferred to fly the route; others preferred to navigate on the grounds that they would not get lost. I flew it for my turn but also a couple of times when flying as co-pilot. Our minimum height on mutual sorties was supposed to be 500ft but we often were lower. I can remember probably my last time around the route. We were flying up a road at about 160 knots I suppose, and up ahead was a chap on a bicycle. As we got closer, he looked over his shoulder and promptly fell off. We next came to some houses, and I remember 2 boys who must have heard us running around from the back of the house and looking up at us. As they came into view they looked up and promptly flung themselves flat on the ground. We could get away with things in those days. We were not as noisy as fast jets and were much slower. The Oakington course was one of the best I did, and I finally came out top. Two of us used to go fishing on the twin canals in Cambridgeshire most evenings and I think that helped us to relax in the evening and be
