306very worried that may have happened to me as I was complaining of back pain and I was after all 50 years old. They said they had to take my flying jacket off. I went to get up to do it, but they made me lie down while they slowly worked it off. As I had been walking around the field before being picked up this was a bit annoying and also very painful. I had a complete team of doctors and nurses while the chief doctor explained to them everything he was going to do. They then took off my flying boots and asked if my toe hurt. I told them it didn%u2019t and asked why. He held up my boot which had a tear over where my big toe should be and told me I had lost the toenail. I had no pain there at all. My foot had hit the bottom of the coaming when I went out and there was a bolt sticking down which did the damage. They turned that round on all the Tucanos later. We had a leg restraint system that pulled our legs up against the seat as it moved up and so our feet should not hit the bottom of the instrument panel. They must have got my flying suit off as well and then x-rayed me. We were then both put to bed in another ward. After a bit they came and said that they needed to x-ray me again as there was something wrong. They did this from another angle and then sent me back to the ward.After some time, some of the chaps from the flight came to see us and they brought Gabby with them who burst into tears when she came in. We chatted about what had happened and eventually they said we could go home, and that Linton was sending an ambulance for us. The visitors left and eventually an ambulance arrived. It must have been the oldest one in the fleet and the suspension was terrible. That journey back was agony for my back. When we got to Linton, we went straight in to see the board of inquiry. The head of the board was John Houlton . He was an old friend who I had taken through CFS many years earlier. They asked me what had happened and told me to write everything down straight away which I did. They did the same to Dode but asked us separately.
