It would appear that he became a bit disorientated as he transferred from visual flying to instruments and was trying to sort it out when he hit the ground. In December that year we were sent down to Norfolk to go to another crashed Tornado. We got as far as the Humber Bridge when we were recalled as we were no longer required. We had stopped just by the toll booths on the bridge and were chatting to the people there when we got the recall. We said that none of us had ever been across the bridge and had been looking forward to it. The staff then said OK go across and then come back for no charge which we did. That was the first and last time I ever used it.In 1987 we had to go to a mid-air crash between a Tornado and a Jaguar in the Lake District. The Tornado crew were lucky to survive. They had ejected at the edge of an escarpment and their ejector seats had gone over the edge so there was enough height for their parachutes to deploy and for them to land safely. If the ground had been flat they would have been killed. The Tornado wreckage was mostly at the bottom of the escarpment I think but the engines, being heavy, always go furthest and had crossed over a road into fields beyond. The police closed the road and I believe that it was closed for quite some time much to the inconvenience of local people. The Jaguar pilot was killed on impact. A Navy helicopter crew had removed his body even though they were not supposed to. We searched over the fell and found the remains of the cockpit. This area was potentially dangerous as the ejector seat explosives were lying about. We also realised that there were various body parts there as well. Our ambulance man identified several bits. We had no official equipment to deal with these body parts and so we had to gather them up into a carrier bag. A ghoulish thought but sometimes to get the job done you have to work with what you have whilst still being as respectful as possible. Later, when we went into
