                                    217lead to the possibility of being a maths teacher. I also upgraded from being a Cub Leader to a Scout leader. I had run Cubs for some time with Judy Thompson. It involved a fair bit of planning as well as weekly meetings but I enjoyed it. We also took the cubs camping during the School Spring Break. We had one camp at Brandsby but usually went to Hasty bank in the North York moors. That was a lovely site with a hut and a stream. The boys could make rope bridges across the stream and the hut had a little room where we leaders could sit in in the evening. Gabby and Tom came along to cook and we had another leader Elaine. Geoff Wood took all the equipment up using his Landrover and trailer and we put up a large marquis for eating in. The boys had to erect their own tents. We did supervise them cleaning teeth and themselves but they had to do lots of things themselves. We stayed out for 2 nights. The first night was always difficult as you had to chase them back to their beds several times. Excited boys running around in a clearing in the woods was very much what they wanted to do. The next day they would be very tired, and several wanted to go home. They would come to us and complain of a tummy ache. I would tell them that I had a magic medicine for that and would get some for them. They drank it and were told that they would be better in a minute and why not go and join in the football or whatever else was going on. They would and were immediately cured. Elaine was amazed at this and asked what I had given them. %u201cJust water, but do not tell them that.%u201d The second night would be much quieter and us adults would quietly sink a bottle or two of homemade wine as we chatted the night away.At the same time, I had to start organising the SSAFA Air Day that was hosted at Church Fenton. This was organised by SSAFA and their representative came up several times to confer. I think she may have been called Bella. If she was not I apologise to her but will use that name from now on. The display was sponsored by the Yorkshire Evening Post and they provided the commentator, Allen Rowley. I had control
