Consequently, by the end of an hours sortie you had a dead leg and had to hold on to something when you got out to stop you falling over. I had another solo flight the next day and then Steve and I flew SCT together. That first weekend, an aircraft had to be taken to Harari for a major service and another aircraft brought back. I flew an Instrument trip with Rob first. Instrument Flying was somewhat different from what we were used to. They flew procedural approaches using VORs and then joining and flying around a holding pattern before feeding yourself into a Ground Controlled approach. I had last done this at Oakington on the Varsity and it took a bit of thinking about. Also, they fitted a yellow screen across the windscreen, and you wore blue goggles. You could see the instruments but everything else was black. You lined up for take-off and kept straight with the compass and on landing, the safety pilot took over at 100ft or so and landed. Even that was not easy as the yellow screen was so scratched that it was hard to see through and could not be removed in flight. After that Rob took me to Harari in the war version of the SF260 which they called the Warrior. This was finished in a camouflage finish and had a gun sight. I think they used it for weapon training. The flight to Harari took 50 minutes and we flew along at 500ft or so. At one point He saw a native village and said this is what we did in the war. He accelerated and let down to very low level. The cross on the gun sight was at a point just in front of the aircraft and he dived towards and around the native huts. At one point there was a woman walking towards us carrying a pot on her head. I was looking straight at her face and so we could only have been a couple of feet off the ground. He pulled up over her as she dived to the ground. He then departed the area by flying under, yes under, the branches of what looked like fruit trees. He zigzagged away and then climbed up a bit. I just thought that it was not surprising that the natives were fed up with White Rule. We went through a game park also at very low level and 2
