22We had a spare trip before the summer break and Pete asked what I wanted to do. Two of us agreed to do a low level trip as a pair. Something that was definitely not on the syllabus. There were very specific low level areas that you were allowed to fly in in those days. In fact, you always knew if you were out of the designated area because farm animals would scatter as they were not used to the noise. One of the other things you had to avoid were mink farms. If you went over one of them the mink all killed each other in a panic and as the RAF had to pay you were in deep trouble. Anyway, we planned it up and set off. It was great fun trying to keep the other aircraft in sight as we roared along. Then suddenly a light came on in the Standard Warning Panel. It was an amber one so not terribly serious, but you would still have to react. I think it may have been low fuel pressure. Pete asked me what I should do. I didn%u2019t know and so he told me to get my flight reference cards out. We carried a flip type book with all the checks in it as an aide memoire although we were supposed to know most of them. I had left my cards in flight planning when we had planned the sortie. And so, Pete got his out. Unfortunately, the pages were all stuck together with melted chocolate and so were unreadable. Each aircraft had a set in a map pocket on the left-hand side of the cockpit and these were tied on with a piece of string so that they didn%u2019t come loose in flight and perhaps snag or jam the controls. I got these out and handed them to Pete. All this time I had carried on flying at low level looking at our leader ahead and to the right. At about this stage a church tower went between us and we decided we had better pull up. Which we did and flew home. Chapter 4During that summer leave, Pete arranged for 2 of us to spend a week with 85 Squadron at West Raynham. They flew Meteors and Canberras. The Canberra was used to train navigators for the Javelin. One aircraft was fitted with a radar and the other operated as a target. They posi-
