21the same anti8submarine/maritime patrol role. In 1942, No 461 Sqn was formed from a nucleus of No 10 Sqn and it also served in the same role for the rest of the war, the two squadrons sinking a total of twelve U8Boats. Also deployed in Coastal Command was No 455 Sqn. This unit had been the first Australian unit in Bomber Command, having been operational in 5 Group from late 1941. It transferred to the anti8shipping role in the spring of 1942, initially still flying the Hampden but replacing these with Beaufighters. It eventually joined the Dallachy Wing and achieved considerable success against enemy shipping off Norway and Denmark. The Australian contribution to Bomber Command took the form of six main force squadrons, operating mainly within 1 and 5 Groups for much of the war. A total of about 13,000 Australian airmen served in Bomber Command, a significant proportion being outside their own air force. Casualties amongst RAAF personnel amounted to 4,050; 7.3% of the Bomber Command total. Another bomber unit, No 464 Sqn, was equipped initially with Venturas but in 1943 it was reassigned to 2nd TAF and, rearmed with Mosquitos, undertook a series of pinpoint bombing raids against high value enemy targets. With the threat of war in the Far East, four RAAF squadrons were deployed to defend Singapore and Malaya. When the Japanese attacked No 1 Sqn was at Kota Bahru and No 8 Sqn at Kuantan, both with Hudsons, while No 21 Sqn was at Sungei Patani with Brewster Buffalos. A second Buffalo unit, No 453 Sqn, was at Sembawang. %u0001%u0003%u0004%u0005 %u0006%u0007%u0008%u0004%u0009%u0005%u0006%u0004%u0003%u000b%u0004%u0005%u0006%u000c%u0003%u0005%u000e%u000f%u000b%u0010%u000b%u0004%u0011%u0005 %u0012%u000e%u000e%u0013%u0005 %u0012%u0014%u000e%u0013%u0005 %u0012%u0015%u0016%u000e%u0013%u0005 %u0017%u000e%u000e%u0013 %u0018%u0005%u0001%u000c%u0019%u000f%u001a%u000f%u000c%u001a%u0003%u0004%u0001%u0005%u0006%u0001 %u0007%u0008%u0009%u000b%u0009%u000c%u0001%u000e%u000f%u0010%u0011%u0012%u0001 %u0013%u0014%u0001 %u0015%u0016%u0001 %u0015%u0001 %u0017%u0001 %u0018%u0001 flfl%u0018%u0005%u0019%u0009%u001a%u0001%u0005%u0015%u0001 %u0007%u0008%u0009%u000b%u0009%u000c%u0001%u0007flffiffl%u0001 %u0013%u0015ff%u0001 %u0018fi%u0001 %u0018%u0001 %u0015%u0001 %u0006%u0001 ffiffl%u0018%u0005 !%u0012%u0001%u0005%u0018%u0001 \%u000f%u0009ffl!%u0009%u0001#$%u000cffl%u0001 %u0018%u0016%u0001 %u0006%u0014%u0001 %u0015%u0001 %u0006%u0001 %u0017%u0001 flff%u0018%u0005%%u0009%u0011%u0001%u0005%u0005%u0001 &%u0003'(fl%u000c%u0012%u0003%u0001#$%u000cffl%u0001 %u0005fi%u0001 %u0006%u0014%u0001 %u0015%u0001 %u0006%u0001 %u0017%u0001 flfi%u0018%u0005ff)%u000cffi%u0001%u0009!%u000b%u0009%u0008%u0003%u0001%u0003%u0008%u0010*%u0001)%u0003%u0012%u000b%u0009ffi%u0001%u0015%u0005%u0001+%u0009%u0012%u0001%u001a%u0010%u0001'%u0009ffl,%u0001%u0013%u0006-%u0001%u0003.%u0001%u0012%u000b%u0009%u0001/%u0006%u0018%u00010%u00011))%u0019%u0001ffl$%u0001%u0005%u00010%u000112)%u00193%u0001+%u0009ffi%u0009%u0001.ffi%u0003%u0001%u0012%u000b%u0009%u00014%u0003%u000c%u000c%u0003'*%u0001Fig 1.
